This interactive event is designed for deaf academics at mid- or senior-career level – those who navigate complex roles and responsibilities within and outside the university such as teaching, research, supervision, leadership, community engagement, and administration. Participants should be well beyond the PhD or postdoctoral stage and established in their academic careers.
Schedule and practical info
- Start: Thursday 2 October at 18.00 CET
- End: Saturday 4 October (evening)
- Registration fee: 1.600 Norwegian kroner, which includes:
- workshop participation
- lunch and coffee breaks (Friday and Saturday)
- light dinner (Thursday)
- group dinner (Saturday)
- The fee does not cover local transport, breakfast, or hotel accommodation.
We recommend booking at the Thon Hotel Gyldenløve, a ten minutes walk from the workshop venue.
Workshop themes
This workshop will explore many themes that reflect the complexities of academic life. Topics will include
- Navigating different academic career pathways
- Academic leadership: mentoring, supervision, managing research groups/centers, taking on wider institutional responsibilities
- Engagement beyond the university: knowledge exchange, partnerships and activism
- Work-life balance, decompression strategies, mental wellbeing, deaf tax, emotional labour
Format and language
The workshop is collaborative and International Sign will be the language of interaction.
We invite contributions from scholars at the mid to senior level stage in their careers, working in different linguistic, national, and institutional contexts. You may propose:
– a 15-minute presentation,
– a 30-minute panel, or
– a (limited number of) 1-hour workshops
The most common form of presentation will be in panels. You are welcome to pick a theme from the options in the registration form, or propose a new topic. The Dr Deaf Team will create panels based on who shows interest in certain topics with the aim of ensuring a diversity of representative experiences.
